Build a ChatGPT app from your website: what to prepare

A website can give you the starting material for a ChatGPT app: product explanations, policies and common questions. It cannot, by itself, establish a working connection to live stock, a customer account or a payment system. Start by deciding what the customer should be able to do.

What a website can provide

List the pages that answer your most important customer questions. Choose current product guides, policies and service descriptions. Remove retired offers and conflicting versions. Assign an owner to each source so it can be maintained after the first import.

Keep facts and marketing claims separate. “Suitable for a 15-inch laptop” can support a specific choice. “The perfect bag for everyone” cannot tell a customer whether their device fits.

Write a website-to-app brief

  • Customer request: the question or task to support.
  • Approved sources: pages that contain the answer and their owner.
  • Missing facts: details that need clarification or another source.
  • Live connection: any system that must be queried during the request.
  • Next step: a product page, checkout, request or contact route.
  • Acceptance case: the expected answer and evidence of completion.

Use this brief to compare a builder with a managed implementation. It makes the unknown work visible before someone promises a delivery date.

What a quick prototype does not prove

A prototype can show the conversation and reveal gaps in the source material. It does not establish production access, safe customer-account handling or a published listing. A simulated cart is not a paid order.

Ask who implements missing connections and who maintains them. For Shopify, the integration guide separates store preparation, live data and hosted-checkout handoff.

Test with the difficult questions

Ask for information absent from the website, a product with a missing attribute and a policy exception. Change an approved page and check the next relevant answer. The assistant should clarify or explain the gap instead of filling it with a plausible promise.

The knowledge base guide contains a source template and evaluation process. Use those checks before adding actions.

Plan publication separately

Follow OpenAI’s current submission process for the public distribution route. Packaging, automated checks, review and publication take separate work. This article makes no fixed build-time or approval-time promise.
