Start by making your business information accurate and easy to retrieve. Then decide whether customers need an interactive integration as well. Being mentioned in an AI answer, being cited as a source and letting someone use your service inside an AI product are different goals.

## Two ways customers can encounter your business

**Discovery:** an answer may mention your business or cite a public page. **Interaction:** a supported app or integration lets a customer query your systems or request an action. You can improve your website without building an app. An integration does not guarantee recommendations.

For an experience on your own website, start with [our website-assistant planning guide](https://noodleseed.com/ai/blog/add-ai-to-website). For a ChatGPT listing, use the [app directory and metadata guide](https://noodleseed.com/blog/chatgpt-app-directory-optimization).

## Check each platform's actual evidence

Do not assume ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini use the same sources or ranking rules. For each test, record the product, date, location, question, whether web search was used, and the links actually cited. A monitoring tool's sampled response is not every customer's experience.

OpenAI distinguishes [OAI-SearchBot for search](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots) from GPTBot for model training. Review the relevant access policy instead of treating every AI crawler as interchangeable. For Google's AI search features, [Google states that existing SEO fundamentals apply](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features); indexed, snippet-eligible pages can qualify without special AI markup. That guidance concerns Google Search, not every Gemini experience.

## Make public information useful and verifiable

### Build a dependable business page

State who you serve, what you offer, where it is available and how someone takes the next step. Keep prices, availability and limitations consistent across the product page, pricing page, help content and public profiles. Assign an owner to information that changes.

### Answer specific customer decisions

A useful comparison explains tradeoffs. A useful service page explains eligibility, location and what happens after an inquiry. Use readable text for essential details, link related pages, and support claims with first-hand evidence you are allowed to publish.

### Check crawlability and indexing

Confirm important pages return successful responses, have intended canonical URLs, and are linked from the site. Review robots rules and indexing directives. Submit your current sitemap and inspect priority URLs in Search Console. Fix a diagnosed access problem before rewriting content to chase a dashboard score.

### Keep structured data honest

Markup should describe the visible page and real business facts. Don't invent reviews, customers, offers or certifications. Structured data does not guarantee a citation or recommendation.

## Choose an integration when a customer task needs one

A public policy answer and an account-specific order lookup have different requirements. The latter needs verified access, current source data and a supported integration. List the exact task, systems involved, permissions and confirmation step before choosing a host.

As a practical test, ask what should happen if stock changes, a connection fails or the customer cancels. The experience should report what was confirmed and preserve a clear recovery path. Test each host independently; a shared protocol does not establish identical functionality or distribution.

## A four-week working plan

1. **Week 1 — Baseline:** record priority pages, indexed status and a small set of actual buyer questions. Save cited sources and incorrect facts.
2. **Week 2 — Corrections:** repair broken links and conflicting claims, then improve the existing pages that already receive relevant impressions.
3. **Week 3 — Evidence:** add a useful example, comparison or approved customer account that answers a real question. Document authorship and source dates.
4. **Week 4 — Review:** rerun the same questions, inspect search performance, and compare referrals with confirmed leads or other business outcomes.

This is a work schedule, not a promise that rankings or AI recommendations will change in four weeks.

### Use three separate measurements

- **Visibility:** mentions and citations in a dated, scoped prompt sample.
- **Traffic:** attributable visits from search or AI sources, with unattributed visits kept separate.
- **Outcomes:** signups, qualified inquiries or purchases confirmed by the system that owns them.

Use campaign tags for links you control. Preserve real referral information where available and label internal tests so they do not become customer-acquisition claims.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do I need an app to be mentioned in an AI answer?

No. Public web content can support discovery. Build an integration when the intended customer task requires connected information or actions.

### Can I guarantee that an AI platform recommends my business?

No. You can improve information quality, access and the connected experience, but you cannot promise another platform's recommendation.

### What if an answer has the wrong price or product information?

Record the answer and its cited sources. Correct the source you control, request corrections from the relevant publisher where appropriate, and retest. A website edit does not instantly update every answer.
